An important official memorandum announcing the signing of Queen to the EMI label. It was sent by EMI label manager, David Croker on the 6th April 1973. It reads:
'Re: QUEEN
We have just entered into agreement whereby we will be releasing records by the above group.
Trident Studios have arranged a special performance by the band on Monday 9th April, at the Marquee Club. I would be greatful [sic] if as many people as possible could see their way clear to attend. If you intend coming, would you please let my secretary know, who will make the necessary arrangements.'
The memo was sent to Paul Watts, Mike Phillips, Terry Pritchard, David Sandison, Paul Prenter, Hilary Arris, Ian Mactavish, John Pope, Martin Nelson and Stuart Watson.
In ‘Queen As It Began’ Jacky Gunn and Jim Jenkins comment on Queen’s signing to EMI, ‘They (EMI) offered a contract, which Trident refused asking for more money. EMI turned them down and offered another - and so on and so on, until they had negotiated the best possible deal for Queen - and EMI had also to accept the other two Trident artists, or there would have been no deal. It was March 1973 before Queen were ushered into the new offices of EMI Records Ltd to sign their first recording contract. It was all over quickly and without much fanfare, but suddenly Queen found themselves with a record deal covering the UK and Europe. They were excited, it seemed that at last they were getting somewhere and all that hard work was about to pay off.’
The memorandum measures 20.3cm x 25.5cm (8 inches x 10 inches). There are creases to the top and bottom right corners. The condition is very good.
